Only a diamond is capable of cutting or polishing its counterpart. Diamonds are one among the hardest metals known, but still susceptible to heavy blows. In fact, the maintenance of Diamond Jewellery calls for more attention in comparison to plain gold jewellery. But still it is no rocket science and could be easily understood by a layman.
As a rule of the thumb, always refrain from wearing diamond jewelry when doing a rigorous work. Women can better remove diamond jewellery while carrying out routine household tasks. Don’t place your ring on the rim of a sink while washing the face as it can easily slip down the drain. While dining at a function it is always recommended that you wear your diamond ring on the left hand to eliminate the chances of oil content in food intruding into the ring. Once you return home from the function secure each of the diamond jewellery in separate compartments of the jewellery case, preferably with fabric lining. This will ensure that the precious stones in two successive pieces of jewellery do not collide with each other. Alternatively, you can cover the jewellery in soft tissue paper and use a jewellery pouch for each piece.
Even if you wear diamond jewellery occasionally, it is advisable to employ the services of a professional jeweler annually, once a year. He will be in a position to perform an extensive cleaning. If signs of damage or loosening of the stone from the support of the base metal is observed take it as early as possible to the expert. His experience in undertaking repair work and proper cleaning shall come handy.
Prolonged exposure of the precious stone to skin oil, shaving & facial creams, deodorant and other substances can take a toll, gradually dimming the characteristic glitter of the diamond. As a remedy, you need to soak the yellow gold diamond jewellery in a solution of warm water sprinkled with a few drops of ammonia. Now gently scrub with an old toothbrush with soft bristles. Rinse and dry with a soft and pure cloth. Perform this cleaning process at regular intervals for long lasting glow of the diamond. For this purpose you may use an ammonia-based household cleaner (such as window cleaner) . Exercise special care to brush the back of the diamond as this will be the area that clogs most oil and dirt.
A word of caution needs to be expressed as well. Avoid usage of harmful solutions for cleaning purposes as it may do more harm than good. Chlorine or abrasives should seldom be used for such purposes. These solutions are characterized by a malefic effect of loosening the sharply pointed edges of diamonds(prongs), or even dissolving the metal completely. It is good to remove diamond jewellery before having a bath in swimming pools.
At times, an ultrasonic cleaner may be employed to peel off the dirt masking the diamonds. The cleaner transmits high frequency sound waves via detergent solution, thereby vibrating the fluid which in turn removes grime and accumulated dirt. However, this method needs to be implemented only under the supervision of an expert as it is also known to unmount loose stones, on the flip side.
A regular visit to the jeweler at least once a year for maintenance purposes is a good practice to keep the health of the stone in good shape and spruce it up for enhanced glow.
With a black thread tied to the centre piece, anchor the maangtikka to your centre parting, while pining the rest of the necklace onto each side, using bobby pins. You could also try this with a pendant. Remove the chain and use a black thread and bobby pin to secure the tikka in place. Remember to comb your hair over the parting so the thread doesn’t show!
Mini-jhumkas + Fancy Kadas = A whole new set of bangles!
This one is super easy to do. Wind a small pair of jhimkis around a bangle using a thin piece of copper wire or golden/silver thread. Make sure your jhimkis are lighter than the bangle, else they will fall off.
You can also try colourful cloth latkans to match your outfit instead of jhumkis
Go Boho with Bangles
Fashion a chic bohemian necklace by looping a long chain through a bangle. Ensure that the chain is long enough to reach your midriff and the bangle sits right below your sternum. You can change up colours – use beaded necklaces or bangles of oxidised silver to create an edgier look. If you feel a bangle would be too large for you, try a hoop earring instead
Similarly, drape a long necklace around your wrists a couple of times to wear it like a chunky bracelet.
Let your Back do the Talking
Low back necklaces are trendy this season. All you need is a thin gold chain and a cute little pendant, wear it around your neck, just clasp it around the front instead of the back!
Plain White Golden Tee
Too many of us never think of wearing our gold chains or malai on western outfits, relegating them only to festive occasions that call for traditional wear. However, pairing a long gold chain with a simple white tee is all you need to take an everyday look and turn it into a classy outfit!
Simple hacks like these will go a long way in making you look like a true Diva. Start experimenting with little things – a chain here, a bangle there, and soon you will be accessorizing like a pro! Remember to always be true to yourself, and do it for your own enjoyment first, and then to impress others. And as always – less is more! Good luck!
